Microfibers off fleece
From the washing machine to the sea
More and more garments are made of synthetic fibres. These include, for example, polyester, polyethylene and elastane. According to the Chemical Fibers Industry Association, the market share of synthetic fibers in global fiber production in 2015 was 74%. These garments lose plastic microfibers when washed.  While about 130 fibers are detached per sheet in linen and 150 fibers on average in shirts, up to 1,900 synthetic fibers per wash in polymer textiles such as fleece garments are discharged into wastewater. This microplastic can only be insufficiently retained in sewage treatment plants and is then transported into the sea via rivers.Around 60 percent of clothing worldwide now contains polyester. The cheap synthetic fiber is the big driver of the fast fashion industry - and turns out to be a disaster for the oceans.
"Guppy Friend" is a washing bag made of microfibre that retains such pieces of synthetic fibre, which can then be disposed of with the residual waste.
