The scrap yard in Old Fadama, Accra/Ghana is better known as „Agbogbloshie“. It has become worldwide a symbol for inappropriate treatment of waste from electric and electronic equipment. However, the area is much more than a dumpsite for e-waste: In reality, it is a recycling, upcycling and repair cluster where hundreds of people make their livelihood from scrap and supporting services like selling of water, food, providing toilets and showers etc. .
From December 14-15, 2018, the re:publica conference for the first time took place in Africa. The Ghanaian capital Accra was chosen as venue.
Under the topic "Waste", the E-Waste programme of Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, among others, showed the exhibition "
Discovering Agbogbloshie ", a joint production by Veronika Johannes and Michael Funcke-Bartz. The aim was to highlight not only the challenges of managing waste from electric and electronic equipment but also the potential for recycling and upcycling.
