From plastic bags to plastic waste Around 100 billion plastic bags are currently consumed in the EU every year, in Germany an average of 76 per person. By 2025, the number is to be reduced to 40 plastic bags per person. Bags made from thin foils in which, for example, fruit from the supermarket is packaged, can be easily caught by the wind and blown into waters, from where they get into the sea. According to the German Environment Agency,
in Germany 6.1 billion of plastic bags and 3.1 billion bags for packing fruits and vegetables are used every year. That corresponds to 95,000 tonnes of plastic. In addition, there are 900 million paper bags per year.
